From a Ripple to a Tsunami; Marshalling Resources and Building a Network to Transform Access to Filipino Language Instruction in California Public Schools

Abstract
Preserving the languages and cultures of the world and of individual nations in particular is vital to national security, economic well-being and personal growth of all peoples. This paper outlines the history and progress in the teaching and learning opportunities in California. And the Language Acquisition Resource Center's approach with the collaboration of local and state Filipino organizations for the preservation of Filipino in public schools and the development of university programs for the teaching of Filipino language and culture. Our efforts include: Assessing community needs, Advocacy efforts, Professional training, Testing, Technology, SAILN, OPI. Training, Continuing teacher support, Conferences, Student recruitment AND Community culture classes

The National Heritage Language Resource Center invites applications to participate in a Workshop Connecting your Classroom to the Heritage Language Community: Tools and Resources. This workshop, to be held at UCLA on May 16-17, 2008, is aimed at language teachers in community, pre-college, and college programs. It demonstrates ongoing research on language communities in the U.S. and offers approaches for understanding the communities. The workshop also includes demonstrations of community-based curricula as well as hands-on training in data gathering.

2nd Summer Heritage Language Research Institute, June 22-27, 2008

The National Heritage Language Resource Center invites applications to participate in the 2nd Summer Heritage Language Research Institute directed by Professor Maria Polinsky and held at Harvard University June 22-27, 2008. The Institute will be of interest to linguists, applied linguists, faculty in education and foreign languages. Graduate students are encouraged to apply, and some financial support may be available for them.
